Zoya Akhtar

Born in 1972 to renowned poet and script writer Javed Akhtar. Her mother, Honey Irani was a child actress and went onto become an acclaimed screen writer. Films have always been home to Zoya Akhtar.

She worked as a copywriter and then as an assistant director on a number of commercials both national and international. She’s also co-directed a music video for rock band, Pentagram called ‘Price of Bullets’

Zoya has a wide range of experience in the feature film arena, as she worked on a lot independent films being made in India.

2009 saw her feature film directorial debut, ‘Luck by Chance’, which was also written by her.

Her second directorial feature, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara released in 2011, was one of the highest grossers of the year, making her one of the first women to break into the mainly male dominated directors club of commercial Hindi cinema.

She has won prestigious awards for her contribution to Indian cinema –
Filmfare : Best Debutant Director for Luck By Chance (2009), Best Director, Best Film for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011).

Along with the above she is a proud recipient of the prestigious ‘Indian of the year’ award by NDTV for both her films.

She has just finished filming a short film as a tribute to the completion of 100 years on Indian cinema, and is currently working on her next feature film.

Her contribution so far to advertising is a Breast Cancer Awareness Public Service campaign that she directed for Elle India, with the support of Bollywood celebrities.
